The Woods’ second team have had a distinct lack of fixtures so far this year, but they were back in action last Saturday, when they made the long trip to the Sussex coast to play a Hastings United side who included seven first team players in their line-up after the postponement of their Ryman Premier fixture at Bury Town.
But the Northwood youngsters did themselves proud throughout, and it took a stunning second half strike by Danny Ellis to earn United the three points that they needed to swap places with the Woods in the Suburban League table.
Home keeper Matt Armstrong-Ford, playing for the first time since Hastings’ FA Cup second round replay against Harrogate on December 13, was called into early action, producing a flying save to tip away Theo Hunte's long range effort, but he was, on the whole, afforded a quiet afternoon, as United comfortably kept Northwood at arms’ length throughout the ninety minutes.
Not that United were all that effective as an attacking force either, although the usually lethal Scott McDonald might have had a first half hat-trick, and Northwood keeper Joe Woodley made a couple of decent saves to deny Ray Freeman and Sam Adams.
He was utterly helpless when Ellis let fly from the corner of the area in the fifty-seventh minute though, the midfielder's first time shot soaring over his head and into the roof of the net. It was a goal worthy of winning many a game. Ellis almost added a second in the closing stages, but his goal-bound free kick deflected just wide off McDonald.
